Etchings An Etching is created by using a copper plate which is coated with a vanish. After the varnish is coated onto the copper plate, the artist draws the image onto the plate with a sharp tool commonly called an etching tool. (Many types are used). When the artist is finished drawing the image onto the plate, he or she will immerse it in an acid bath. The acid attacks the area where the varnish was scratched away and in so doing, the image is created.
